AIn recent decades, the rise of social media has fundamentally altered the way societies respond to controversial speech. What has come to be known as 'cancel culture' refers to the practice of withdrawing support from public figures, organisations, or institutions that have expressed views considered offensive or harmful by a significant portion of the public. This phenomenon has generated considerable debate among scholars, journalists, and policymakers, particularly regarding its implications for the principle of free expression. Given that online platforms can amplify voices and reactions within hours, the consequences of public condemnation have become far more immediate and widespread than they would have been in previous generations.

BProponents of cancel culture argue that it represents a legitimate form of social accountability. They contend that historically marginalised communities have long lacked the institutional power to challenge harmful narratives promoted by those in positions of authority. Consequently, the collective withdrawal of public support may serve as one of the few available mechanisms through which ordinary individuals can hold the powerful accountable. Research conducted by several media studies scholars suggests that public criticism on digital platforms has, in certain cases, prompted meaningful institutional reforms that more conventional legal or political channels had failed to produce.

CNevertheless, a growing body of critics maintains that cancel culture poses a serious threat to the principles of open discourse and intellectual freedom. It has been observed that the fear of public denunciation can lead individuals to engage in self-censorship, thereby suppressing perspectives that, although uncomfortable, may contribute valuably to broader societal understanding. Furthermore, the speed at which online condemnation spreads appears to leave little room for context, nuance, or the possibility of personal growth and redemption. A statement made decades earlier, for instance, could be resurfaced and judged by contemporary moral standards without adequate consideration of the historical circumstances in which it was originally produced.

DIt is worth acknowledging, however, that the boundaries between legitimate criticism and disproportionate punishment are not always clearly defined. Some scholars have proposed that a distinction should be drawn between organised campaigns that target an individual's livelihood and broader public discourse that simply expresses disapproval. In this view, criticism itself would not constitute cancellation; rather, it is the coordinated and sustained effort to remove someone entirely from public life that raises genuine ethical concerns. This distinction, if accepted, might offer a more balanced framework through which both accountability and expression could be preserved simultaneously.

EUltimately, the tension between cancel culture and free speech reflects a deeper philosophical conflict over the nature of harm and the limits of tolerance in pluralistic societies. Different cultural and political contexts are likely to produce varying attitudes toward these boundaries, and no universally accepted resolution has yet emerged. What does appear clear, however, is that societies must engage in thoughtful, evidence-based dialogue rather than resorting to reactive or absolutist positions. The challenge for institutions, educators, and citizens alike is to develop norms that protect vulnerable communities while also safeguarding the conditions necessary for genuine intellectual inquiry and democratic participation.
