ACultural appropriation has emerged as one of the most contested concepts in contemporary academic and public discourse. The term refers to the adoption of elements from one culture by members of another, particularly when a dominant group borrows from a marginalised one without sufficient acknowledgement or understanding. Scholars have argued that such practices may perpetuate historical power imbalances, given that colonialism has already stripped many communities of their cultural identity. Consequently, what might appear to be harmless borrowing could, in fact, represent a deeper pattern of exploitation that has persisted across generations. The debate, therefore, extends well beyond matters of personal taste or artistic choice.

BCritics of cultural appropriation point to several concrete examples that appear to illustrate the harm caused by such practices. The commercialisation of indigenous ceremonial clothing by large fashion corporations has been widely condemned, as these garments frequently carry profound spiritual significance for the communities that created them. Similarly, the adoption of musical traditions developed by African American artists has historically generated enormous commercial profit for performers from more privileged backgrounds, while the originators themselves received comparatively little recognition or financial reward. These cases suggest that appropriation is not merely a symbolic concern but one with measurable economic consequences for vulnerable cultural groups.

CNevertheless, a number of scholars and cultural commentators have offered a compelling counter-argument, contending that the boundaries between appropriation and genuine cultural exchange are considerably more complex than critics acknowledge. They argue that cultures have never existed in complete isolation and that the cross-pollination of ideas, art forms, and traditions has historically driven human creativity and progress. If strict boundaries were imposed on cultural exchange, it could be argued that many celebrated artistic movements — including jazz, rock music, and fusion cuisine — would never have developed in the forms that the world has come to admire. In this view, the intention and manner of engagement matter far more than the mere act of borrowing itself.

DThe distinction between respectful cultural appreciation and exploitative appropriation appears to rest on several key factors. First, whether the source community has granted permission or expressed approval is considered a fundamental criterion. Second, the degree to which the borrowing party has sought to understand and accurately represent the cultural context of the borrowed element plays a significant role. Third, scholars have suggested that economic benefit must be shared equitably if commercial use is involved. When these conditions are met, cultural exchange may be regarded as mutually enriching rather than harmful. In contrast, when dominant groups selectively adopt aesthetically appealing elements while ignoring or dismissing the broader cultural framework, the practice becomes considerably more problematic.

EAs globalisation continues to accelerate the movement of cultural products across national and digital borders, the debate over cultural appropriation is unlikely to be resolved in the near future. Educational institutions and media organisations have increasingly been called upon to promote what researchers describe as cultural literacy — a nuanced awareness of the histories and meanings embedded in cultural practices. It has been proposed that if consumers and creators were better informed about the origins of the cultural elements they engage with, many instances of harmful appropriation could be avoided. Ultimately, the conversation demands not a rigid set of prohibitions but a sustained and honest engagement with questions of power, history, and respect.
