AThe emergence of digital art has fundamentally altered the way in which creative works are produced, distributed, and valued across the globe. Unlike traditional forms such as oil painting or sculpture, digital art is created entirely through software and electronic devices, which means that any number of perfect copies can be generated from a single original file. This capacity for infinite reproduction has raised profound questions about what authenticity means in a contemporary artistic context. Scholars and critics have long debated whether a work of art derives its value from its physical uniqueness or from the creative vision it embodies, and digital technology has made that debate more urgent than ever before.

BHistorically, the concept of authenticity in art has been closely tied to the notion of the original object. The philosopher Walter Benjamin famously argued that a work of art possesses what he called an 'aura' — a quality arising from its singular existence in a particular time and place. Consequently, a hand-painted canvas carries a sense of irreplaceable presence that a printed reproduction simply cannot replicate. Digital art, however, appears to challenge this framework entirely, given that no single file can be considered more original than any other identical copy. In response to this dilemma, the art world has increasingly turned to blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens, commonly known as NFTs, as a means of establishing verifiable ownership and scarcity in the digital realm.

CNFTs have been presented by their advocates as a revolutionary solution to the problem of digital authenticity. By recording ownership on a decentralised public ledger, an NFT assigns a unique, traceable identity to a specific digital file, even though the image itself may be freely viewed or downloaded by anyone. Several high-profile sales have demonstrated the commercial potential of this approach; the digital artist Beeple sold an NFT artwork for approximately sixty-nine million US dollars in 2021, a transaction that stunned both the art market and the wider public. Nevertheless, critics have questioned whether the financial value attached to such tokens truly reflects artistic merit or whether it is driven primarily by speculative investment and market hype.

DIt would, however, be misleading to suggest that all digital artists have embraced NFTs or that the technology has resolved the deeper philosophical questions surrounding authenticity. A significant number of practitioners argue that the democratising potential of digital art — its ability to reach vast audiences without the gatekeeping traditionally imposed by galleries and auction houses — is undermined when ownership becomes artificially restricted through tokenisation. From this perspective, the true value of digital art lies not in exclusivity but in its unprecedented accessibility. Had the internet not enabled such wide distribution, many talented artists from economically disadvantaged backgrounds would never have found an audience at all.

EThe debate over digital art and authenticity ultimately reflects broader tensions between cultural tradition and technological innovation. It seems likely that neither extreme position — dismissing digital works as inauthentic or uncritically celebrating NFTs as a perfect solution — will prove entirely satisfactory as the field continues to evolve. What appears certain is that the criteria by which society judges artistic value are themselves being reshaped by digital tools and platforms. Future generations of artists and collectors will probably define authenticity in ways that could seem unrecognisable to those trained in conventional traditions, suggesting that the concept itself is far more dynamic and contested than it might initially appear.
