ACities around the world are changing rapidly. In recent years, technology has been used to make urban areas safer, cleaner, and more efficient. These modern urban centres are often called 'smart cities'. A smart city uses digital tools and data to improve the lives of its residents. Countries such as Singapore, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates have already invested heavily in smart city projects. Bangladesh, too, has begun exploring similar ideas for cities like Dhaka and Chattogram.

BOne of the most important features of a smart city is its transport system. Traditional traffic problems, which cause delays and pollution, are being addressed through intelligent systems. Sensors placed on roads collect real-time data about traffic flow. This information is then sent to a central computer, which adjusts traffic signals automatically. As a result, journey times are reduced and fuel consumption is lowered. However, installing such systems requires significant investment, which not all cities can afford.

CSmart cities also focus on energy efficiency. Buildings in smart cities are equipped with devices that monitor electricity use. When a room is empty, lights and air conditioning are switched off automatically. Solar panels and other renewable energy sources have been integrated into many smart city designs. Despite the high initial cost, these technologies help reduce long-term energy bills. Therefore, both the environment and residents benefit from smarter energy management.

DPublic safety is another area where smart technology has made a difference. Surveillance cameras connected to artificial intelligence can detect unusual behaviour in crowded places. Emergency services receive alerts more quickly, which allows them to respond faster. Although some people worry about privacy, many residents feel safer because of these systems. Data collected by these cameras is often stored securely and is only accessed by authorised personnel. The balance between safety and privacy remains an important debate in many cities.

EDespite the many advantages, smart cities also face serious challenges. Not everyone has access to smartphones or the internet, which means some residents may be left behind. Older people and those living in poverty may find it difficult to use digital services. Furthermore, the cost of building smart infrastructure is extremely high. Governments must therefore ensure that smart city development benefits all citizens equally, not just the wealthy. A truly smart city is one that is inclusive, sustainable, and fair for everyone.

Q3 TFNG

Smart city surveillance cameras are manufactured exclusively in South Korea.

The passage mentions South Korea as a country investing in smart cities but says nothing about where surveillance cameras are manufactured.
