AMusic has always been an important part of human culture. In many countries, traditional music has been passed down through generations for hundreds of years. These musical traditions often reflect the history, values, and identity of a community. However, in recent decades, rapid modernisation has changed the way people create, share, and listen to music. As a result, many traditional music forms are now facing serious challenges around the world.
BIn Bangladesh, traditional music includes well-known forms such as Baul, Bhatiali, and Jari songs. These genres have been performed at festivals, river gatherings, and rural celebrations for centuries. Baul music, which carries deep spiritual messages, has been recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Despite this recognition, many young Bangladeshis prefer modern pop music that is heavily influenced by Western styles. Therefore, the audience for traditional music has gradually declined in urban areas.
CThe rise of digital technology has played a significant role in this transformation. Music streaming platforms and social media have made it easier for people to access global music instantly. Young listeners are now exposed to a wide variety of international genres every day. Although some traditional musicians have used these platforms to promote their art, most struggle to compete with the popularity of mainstream entertainment. The internet has therefore become both an opportunity and a threat for traditional music.
DSome organisations and governments have tried to preserve traditional music through education and funding. Music schools in several countries have introduced traditional instruments into their curricula. Cultural festivals have also been organised to raise awareness among younger generations. However, critics argue that these efforts are often insufficient and poorly funded. Unless stronger policies are implemented, many traditional music forms may disappear within the next fifty years.
EDespite the difficulties, there is growing hope for traditional music in the digital age. Several young artists have successfully blended traditional melodies with modern beats, creating a new fusion style that appeals to wider audiences. This approach has helped traditional music reach listeners who would otherwise never have heard it. Many cultural experts believe that adaptation, rather than strict preservation, is the most effective way to keep traditional music alive. The future of traditional music may therefore depend on its ability to evolve without losing its cultural roots.
