AThe Green Revolution was a period of great change in world farming. It began in the 1940s and continued through the 1970s. Scientists developed new types of crops that could grow faster and produce more food. This revolution helped many countries feed their growing populations. It is considered one of the most important events in modern agricultural history.
BBefore the Green Revolution, many farmers used to grow traditional crops with low yields. Millions of people suffered from hunger, especially in Asia and Africa. However, new high-yield varieties of wheat and rice were introduced during this period. These new crops could produce two or three times more food per field. As a result, countries like India and Pakistan avoided serious food shortages.
CThe revolution was also supported by modern technology and chemicals. Farmers began using fertilisers and pesticides to protect their crops. In addition, new irrigation systems were built to supply water to dry fields. Scientists like Norman Borlaug developed improved seeds that changed farming forever. Therefore, food production increased rapidly in many developing countries.
DOn the other hand, the Green Revolution has been criticised for causing environmental problems. The heavy use of chemicals has damaged soil and polluted water sources in some regions. Furthermore, small farmers often could not afford the new seeds and equipment. Although food supply increased, the benefits were not shared equally among all people. Despite higher production, poverty and inequality remained serious issues in rural areas.
EToday, the Green Revolution is remembered as both a success and a warning. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives around the world. However, scientists now believe that sustainable farming methods are needed for the future. Many researchers have said that new solutions must respect both people and the environment. If farmers adopt greener practices, food security can be achieved without harming the planet.
