Another strategy is scanning, which is used to find specific information. For example, a student might scan a passage to find a date or a name. These two strategies have been taught in many schools around the world.

CDespite knowing these strategies, many students do not use them regularly. They often read every word slowly, which takes too much time. As a result, they struggle to finish reading tasks in exams. On the other hand, students who practise skimming and scanning perform better in timed tests. Furthermore, they feel more confident when they face new texts. In addition, their vocabulary improves because they read more frequently.

DActive reading is another strategy that helps comprehension. It involves asking questions while reading a text. For instance, a student might ask, 'What is the writer trying to say here?' This strategy makes reading more engaging and focused. Although it requires more effort, it leads to deeper understanding. However, reading instruction has now become a key part of language teaching. Schools are also providing more practice materials for students. Therefore, learners who apply these strategies regularly are likely to do well in IELTS and other academic exams.
