Prepositions are small words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. The most basic prepositions in English are: in, on, at, to, from, by, with, for, of, and about. These function words indicate location, time, direction, and relationships.

Prepositions are always followed by a noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition. For example, 'in the box' shows location, 'at 3 o'clock' shows time, and 'with my friend' shows accompaniment. Understanding these basic prepositions is essential for IELTS as they help create clear, precise sentences in both writing and speaking tasks.

• Prepositions follow specific patterns for place, time, and direction.
• For PLACE: use 'in' for enclosed spaces and large areas (in a room, in London), 'on' for surfaces (on the desk, on the street), and 'at' for specific points (at the station, at home).
• For TIME: use 'in' for months, years, and parts of day (in May, in 2024, in the evening), 'on' for days and dates (on Friday, on 3rd April), and 'at' for precise times (at 9 AM, at midnight).
• For DIRECTION: use 'to' for destination (go to work) and 'from' for origin (come from India).
• Other common patterns include 'by' for transport (by car, by train) and 'with' for accompaniment (with friends).
